Circles and Triangles and Clay, Oh My!

Circles Success Story

The overall goal of this unit is for students to work in cooperative teams to design and create a large mosaic geometric panel. The panel includes both individual tiles and a group tile that incorporates math concepts (about circles and triangles), and art concepts (including low relief and texture). This unit reinforces geometry terminology as well as the proper use of geometric tools, including compasses and protractors. Students will also learn math content about triangles and circles and will apply this knowledge in the creation of their tiles. (NOTE: For this lesson, you will need access to a kiln if you choose to use regular clay. Many schools have kilns in the art room and the art teacher may be able to assist. If you do not have access to a kiln, you can use air-dry clay.)
